Scenes from "A Brilliant Teacher"
|
 |
In Tanzania we met this Maasai Warrior who took us on an exploratory walk. He showed us how the Maasai use nature to survive. At the end of the walk we stopped in a little cafe where our kids taught him how to play "Go Fish!"

Paraguay

Steve's cousin Heather was a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay. Here we are in front of her house (shack) "shopping" for garlic from the horse cart store.

What looked like a fun and exciting activity turned into an afternoon of terror. Check out the looks of fear and apprehension of Michael, Toby, and Bridget. Riding an elephant down a hill is an E ticket ride!

Egypt
|
Egypt was a fascinating place. 110 degrees in the shade, however, led to a bit of grumpiness even when we were checking out the famed Sphinx and pyramids.

In the pueblos around Fr. Joe's church houses were made of cardboard and bamboo. Lots of people in small spaces. The community of Santisimo Sacramento is always doing something to support the people. Here Michael, Clare, and Steve are helping tear down one house that we later helped rebuild.

In Australia we had to go see the Kangaroos! We found them running amok in a cemetery...

Eleanor Roosevelt said that the Iguazu Falls made Niagara Falls "look like a kitchen faucet." Here the family and Heather take a look.

Malaysia

Durian, that stinky fruit, and other interesting delectables line the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Durian is the large melon just to the right of the woman in the white shirt.

Guatemala

 |
At some points of the trip, we were able to share our traditions. In Huehuetenango we had Thanksgiving Dinner together with our old friends from Portland, Oregon and our new friends. Our friend Kata was in the kitchen.

Germany
|
People, particularly in Germany, often asked us: "Why would you take your children to Dachau?" Children are overwhelmed with violence on television and movies constantly. Our experience in Dachau gave names and faces to the holocaust. The visit to this crematorium was a spine tingling reminder of the reality and cost of violence.

There is a great peacefulness in the town of Assisi, Italy, the home of St. Francis. Its cobblestone streets and picturesque buildings transport you to a time centuries earlier.

Malaysia
|
 |
We met Maas at a "resort" on the eastern coast of Malaysia in Rantau Abang. She runs a school for Muslim children. Toby and I were treated to tea and fish crackers...
